Our families roots date back to the early 1900's John "Buck" Kaleta was born in Canmore in 1917. His love of horses is still the same today as it was when he was a young boy. He had befriended a lame buckskin horse and someone hollered out - "Hey Buckskin!" - and the name has stuck ever since. Buck and his pals caught wild horses, broke them, and would ride them up several kilometres to Spray Lakes and Whiteman's Pass to go fishing. As a young man Buck worked with horses at the Canmore Mines. He and his brother Alex also loved to play hockey and Alex was nicknamed after the race horse "Sea Biscuit" because he was so fast. Alex advanced to what was then the fledgling NHL. As young fellows they didn't have any fancy hockey equipment or gloves. They used catalogues for shin pads! We want to save the rest of our campfire tales for when you come to visit.
